Happy Halloween from Hiccup and Toothless!

Happy Halloween from Hiccup and Toothless

Happy Halloween!

Plan Eat Love is all about planning your meals, eating them, and then, because you took the time to do the planning, spending the rest of the time doing what you love instead of worrying about what you will eat! A couple of my loves that I’ve spent time on these past couple of months are Halloween and sewing. Each year I make our costumes from scratch, and I loved being able to do it this year as well.

Happy Halloween from Hiccup and Toothless

This year my two boys opted to play roles from How to Train Your Dragon. Mr. R, my almost-five-year-old, loves donning his Hiccup costume, while Mr. A plays his trusty dragon, Toothless (by the way, I REALLY wish I got some better pictures, but we were in a rush so it is what it is!).  The Hiccup costume was made completely from scratch. There are a lot of pieces involved, but it all came together so nicely so I’m happy to have spent the time doing it. The Toothless costume only took a couple of hours to put together, since I bought the shirt and pants from the store and just had to make the hat, tail, wings, and shoe covers. The costumes are based off of this tutorial found on Make It & Love It. I’ve followed several of the tutorials on there and they are all fabulous! The owner of the blog, Ashley, is very talented at not only sewing but general home projects as well. Plus her kids are adorable! She has tons of detailed costume tutorials that are easy to follow, so if you’re looking for a new costume idea for next year, definitely check out her site.

May your little fairies, pirates, and vampires have a spooktacular fun-filled day, and may you take the time to plan so you can spend the time with the people and things you love!

Halloween Food in 3 stupid-simple ways by Plan Eat Love

It’s no secret I love Halloween. In terms of holidays, it’s right there at the top with Christmas. What else brings a family together better than brainstorming and making costumes, going to pumpkin patches, carving pumpkins, and making silly Halloween foods? The only frustrating thing is that these things can take a lot of time if you aren’t careful. I’ve compiled three stupid-simple tips for making Halloween foods below so you can spend more time enjoying them than preparing them, and still have an amazing Halloween experience!

Slow Cookers + REAL Food BBQ Chicken Cornbread Casserole (in the Slow Cooker!)

Slow Cooker BBQ Chicken Cornbread Casserole by Plan Eat Love, with whole grains and no refined sugar

I’ve got a delicious recipe with chicken, cornbread, sweet potatoes, and corn waiting for you at the bottom of this page. But first, I want to take a second to talk about slow cookers. If there’s one appliance that should be in every busy household, it’s a slow cooker. We used to religiously do Slow Cooker Sundays, but since I’ve been working full-time days these past couple of months, I’ve been doing slow cooker meals more often during the week. It is my lifesaver. I drop the boys off at preschool/daycare first thing in the morning, come back home, then prep the slow cooker for dinner that night and let it cook all day long. When my husband comes home with the boys in the evening, dinner is ready, and we can enjoy ourselves as a family without the mad pre-dinner rush that happens otherwise. Start The Day Off Right With a Bowl of Granola

A delicious alternative to store-bought boxed cereal, this granola from Plan Eat Love features oats, nuts, ginger, and other spices.

Mmmm… breakfast. The first meal of the day, the first food you are putting into your mouth to start off a brand new day-chapter of your life. What you eat first thing in the morning can definitely affect how the rest of your day goes. If you are putting a ton of refined sugar into your belly, you are going to spend the rest of the day staving off sugar cravings and feeling sluggish and lethargic (not to mention the especially negative effects of sugar for our children . However, if you put real, whole foods into your body, you experience quite the opposite: in control of your diet, limited sugar cravings, a clear mind, and peace knowing that you started your day off right. Plan Eat Love: Why I Got Started On This Food Journey

Five years ago I was awaiting the birth of my first son, while my husband, Nathan, and I were going through school. I was working on my undergrad in Bioinformatics and I had two more semesters to go before I was done, and Nathan would be in it for quite a while, as he not only received his undergrad, but his master’s and PhD as well. With both of us going to school full-time and working part-time, as you can imagine, finances were tight.

Sunni's Graduation Day

My graduation happened, even with baby in tow!

To stretch our money, I started couponing and ad-matching. I had a few friends that would do it and get some amazing deals that way, so I figured why not try it out? I matched up my ads and coupons, figured out what we wanted to eat based off of the sales (and whatever else we were feeling), made a list of other things we needed, took my list and headed off to Walmart.
